The space exhibition

Discover developments in space travel over a period of more than 60 years! The space exhibition is organised around a number of themes, with developments in Dutch space travel playing a major role. Important developments in the history of space travel are also on display.

Dutch space travel

The Netherlands has played an active role in space travel for decades. This section of the exhibition focuses on models of the most important Dutch satellites:

  • ANS (Astronomical Dutch Satellite)

  • IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite)

  • Sloshsat-FLEVO

History of Space Travel

Relive the pioneering days of space travel. Here you will find historical models, such as:

  • A model of the Vostok capsule in which Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth.

  • Models from the Gemini programme and the iconic lunar module from the Apollo programme.

  • Information about key moments in the race to the moon and the evolution of space capsules.

Living with Satellites

Space travel is closer than you think. Under this theme, you will discover how satellites influence our daily lives:

  • Communication

  • Navigation (GPS)

  • Earth observation

  • Precision farming

Manned space travel

From the first space travel to long-term missions aboard space stations:

  • Scale models of manned capsules such as Soyuz, Apollo, and Shenzhou.

  • An impressive model of the ISS (International Space Station).

  • Information about space stations such as Skylab, Saljut, and Mir.

An unusual origin

Did you know that this exhibition has its origins in a living room in Lelystad? Starting in the 1960s, Henk van Wezel collected space objects in the smallest house museum in the world, this was even included in the Guinness Book of Records. In 2004, the collection found a new home in Aviodrome, where it grew into this unique exhibition.
